National Park Popocatepetl Iztaccihuatl

The Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl Park comprises an area of ​​90 thousand hectares that cover part of the states of Mexico, Puebla and Morelos. It also includes the second and third summits of Mexico, this refers to the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes, hence the name of this park. On the other hand, not everything is cold and snow, since there is also vegetation that dominates the area in the middle of pine forests, oaks and tall meadows.

The iconic Popocatepetl, the Popo, has a height of 5,542 meters, its cone is also of the Strombolian type and is believed to have been formed approximately 12 million years ago.

However, its continuous volcanological activity earned it its name, which in Nahuatl means “mountain that smokes” and currently the traffic light is yellow as it periodically exhales fumaroles and these warn that it is active.

On the other hand, on one side of the Popocatpetl volcano, we find Iztaccíhuatl, which, as its name says in Nahuatl, has the silhouette of a sleeping woman, but its altitude is estimated at 5,220 meters.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN THE POPOCATÉPETL AND IZTACCÍHUATL PARK

The National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) has restricted access to the Popocatépetl volcano due to the volcanic emergency, so the ascent cannot be made.

It is also recommended to previously verify if the Paso de Cortés is open. For those planning to climb, it is important to register at the Park offices, located in Amecameca, State of Mexico.

The best months to visit this place are from November to March, you can go hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering, horseback riding and camping.
